Augusta is the capitalcity of Maine. Its population in 1950 was 20,913. It is on theKennebec River. As early as the year 1628, there was a trading postknown as Cushnoc where Augusta now stands, and in 1754 Fort Westernwas built there and a settlement grew up. In 1831 it was made thecapital of Maine, and in 1849 it was incorporated as a city. Augusta has abundant waterand is a center for industries that need water, such as papermanufacturing and cotton goods. Near by is Hallowell, Maine, wherefamous granite is quarried, and the domed capitol building in Augustais made of this gleaming white stone. Augusta is also the name of animportant city in Georgia, on the Savannah River. Its population in1950 was 71,508, and it is important in the cotton and textilebusinesses.
