Translation jobs are undertaken by professional translators who are well versed with at least two languages.Translation can work at two levels: inter-state or regional language translation and inter-national or foreign language translation. Some forms of parent involvement with the school such as communications with school, volunteering, attending school events and parent--parent connections appeared to have little effect on student achievement, especially in high school. The owner of a largechain of English schools in Brazil suggested to me that adultcontemporary pop songs whose lyrics contained concentrated areas ofgrammar would be of great benefit to ESL students. The concept of usingsongs to aid in the teaching/learning of English is not a new one. WhenI looked into this area I found that the songs being used are eitheraimed at children, or standard songs whose only real "English learningbenefit" is that they are composed in the English language.Overthe past 2 years I have been composing songs that contain a grammaticalfocus in their lyrics. They cover difficult grammatical areas such asirregular verbs and prepositions.Case StudyVisit this youtube link to view the chorus of a Tutortunes video for the lyrics below which focuses on Irregular Verbs.Irregular Verbs Song (chorus)Every place we've been, every song we've sung,Every fight we've fought, every race we've run,Every time we've lost our way we've found a path that leads us through.Every fear we've felt, every inch we've grown,Every word we've said, every thought we've known,Every thing we've done and every thing we do,Ties a part of me to a part of you. Ifyou can learn the lyrics to this chorus you have learnt 11 irregularverbs in their past participle form. The song actually contains 21irregular verbs each sung in context in all 3 of their forms (presentpast and past participle.. So an advanced student who can learn theentire song (This is a very large advanced song) has not only learntthe three forms of 21 irregular verbs but can also apply them in aphrase. This knowledge is recalled differently to material learntin a "studied" way. Think how hard it is to recall the exact words of astory but how easy it is to recall them in a song. I propose thatlyrics presented in adult contemporary "catchy" pop songs (as opposed to children's music) will help ESL students absorb the areasof English grammar that are illogical, such as irregular verbs, in a fun and enjoyable way.
