Interested in a personally and professionally rewarding massage therapy career? Today, the Texas Massage Institute can provide you with essential education and skills necessary to become a practicing massage therapist. Founded in 1999, the Texas Massage Institute boasts four campuses in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Plano, and Longview. With its curriculum endorsed by the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP), the Texas Massage Institute is also approved to accept candidates from the Texas Commission for the Blind, the Texas Rehabilitation Commission and the Private Industry Council. "We're about changing people's lives," says the school's co-owner, Tommy Rust. "We have an obligation to our students, and we do everything we can to help them get through (the program)." As such, the school even offers free tutoring to its students, he adds. Currently providing a 300-hour, state-mandated curriculum in basic massage therapy, the Texas Massage Institute prepares candidates to become certified massage therapists. "Our basic massage therapy program teaches Swedish massage, stress reduction and relaxation techniques," says Rust. "Our students are offered a program that prepares students for national certification as well." In addition to basic instruction in Swedish massage, students are taught about anatomy, physiology, business, hydrotherapy, health, and hygiene. Furthermore, Texas Massage Institute provides a number of 100-hour advanced programs in deep tissue massage, East-West healing arts, trigger point, and "Core" training that introduces students to kinesiology, pathology, therapeutic massage and bodywork, among other subject matter. Additionally, Texas Massage Institute offers a spa certification program that entails hands-on instruction in theory, hydrotherapy, pathology, business, therapeutic massage and bodywork, and ethics. "Each campus has a series of continuing education classes that we offer," says Rust, "including prenatal/post partum, Oriental style (massage), Tuina... the gamut is just as varied as the people doing massage." Texas Massage Institute is also commited to its students' future careers via its career services. "At each campus, there is a job board and job book," says Rust. "We average about 15-20 requests per week for massage therapists. There is a tremendous demand." The Texas Massage Institute also helps students achieve career and educational goals by providing affordable and flexible payment options from interest-free, pay-as-you-go plans to other student loans. Rust says Texas Massage Institute's educational success lies in its student body's 94-98 percent passing rate. "We have the highest pass rate in the state," he says. "Most of our students have gone into private practice." In its capacity as the largest free-standing massage therapy school in the state, Rust explains that the school mimics a traditional college college setting. "It's a professional atmosphere so the students can carry this on in their own private practices." And as far as hands-on training goes, the school operates year-round, six days a week, providing working students with flexibility.
