Hearthstone's newest expansion takes us to the Scourge necropolis of Naxxramas. The PVE downloadable content is a five-wing challenge, and if you are a World of Warcraft fan, you will immediately notice its resemblance to the Naxxramas raid instance. Once the update has been downloaded, a player will see a noticeable change in the opening menu of the game. The Solo Adventures can now be seen between The Arena and Play options. In the expansion, a player will go up against two to four bosses per wing. I was confident entering the first wing because I know I have forged competitive decks. I wish I was not because bosses proved to be very challenging.BossesBy using a combination of unseen hero powers, special cards, and regular cards, each boss has given me a run for my money. Other than that, the two copy per card rule does not apply to enemy bosses. I have personally seen a Worshipper card casted every turn until Grand Widow Faerlina, a boss, has four attack per turn. Through research, I found that a boss deck can have as much as six copies of a certain card.Defeating a boss can be sweet because the game rewards you with two new cards. Once I was done with the Normal mode in the first wing, the class-specific challenge mode and the heroic difficulty level. In the challenge mode, I battled against the same bosses but using a deck handed to me by Blizzard. It was a fun affair but nothing seriously challenging. Things began to get serious when I tried my luck at the heroic difficulty. The opponents have 45 health with increased power and card capabilities. Grand Widow Faerlina's Rain of Fire is a menace in heroic difficulty. If I save my cards to keep a small advantage, I get pummeled. If I put all my cards in the table, I leave myself exposed to all sorts of trouble. ThemeNaxxramas is a place obsessed with death. Almost all cards have death-related abilities like death rattle or damage. The card above is but an example of how death rules in Naxxramas.Opponents in Naxxramas also come out of the gates swinging like the minions are eager to die. Many cards are cheap, similar to the casting costs of Warlock cards so I had to survive by using damage control tactics early. I was also careful in using board clearing spells because minions like Haunted Creeper and Nerubian Egg will welcome the damage. ReviewFor $5 per wing, the expansion provides great value for your money. I consider myself a hardcore player, and I'm having a blast tweaking my deck if it is going to be of any match to the bosses in the heroic difficulty. Another exciting thing is the integration of new cards to my existing decks. Cheap costs and the death rattle ability make Naxxramas cards valuable additions to rush decks. For a few days now, I have totally forgotten about ranked play because of this new add-on. I am looking forward to the opening of new wings and the other cards that I will unlock.
