Attention! Till date if you have been thinking of softwaredevelopment as a protean solution, its time to think again! Arecent industry report issued by Forester Consulting puts forth someunimaginable revelations. According to the report, even thoughenterprises are increasingly adopting software solutions in theirbusiness models to expand their performance horizons, entrepreneursstill remain disgruntled about the result-rendering capabilities ofthese solutions. The study titled Continuous Delivery: A Maturity AssessmentModel was constituted by Thought Works, a software developmentcompany which pioneers in continuous delivery model. Theassociated report which is available for download on the officialcompany website, clearly states- software development providers andtheir teams are not able to serve the surging demands of businessleaders and are finding it gruesome to come up with new andinnovative solutions to suffice business requisites. 325 IT and business professionals spanning across United Kingdom,United States and Australia contributed to the study, which aimed atevaluating whether their present delivery processes are capable ofsufficing their rocketing demand for innovation. The most surprisingrevelation of the report, however, remained the bloating gap betweenbusiness expectations and corresponding software developmentsolutions. As per the survey, while 51 per cent of participatingentrepreneurs expected their software solutions to be deliveredwithin a time frame of six months, 70 per cent of them admitted thatthe solutions are actually completed in a much longer span.Surprisingly, around 40 per cent of business leaders noted that therehave been instances when the IT departments took more than a year todeliver solutions to counter work innovative ideation. The study noted- this speed gap between expectations and deliverieshas kept businesses from utilizing their software developmentventures from creating a breakthrough in the marketplace by launchingnew features and products at the first place. Besides, it hasprompted businesses to respond to the prevailing industry trendsrather than exploring untapped avenues. Probing further, the report suggests corporate culture to be majorimpedance in the success of the software development vertical. Suchhierarchical culture results in discord, as leaders consider ITdepartments as mere order takers, a view which doesnt godown well with the IT professionals. 42 per cent businessdecision-makers regarded IT departments as regular service providerswho respond to requests, while only 14 per cent accounted them asdriving force for technological innovation and 43 per cent were ofthe view that the two departments work in collaboration in order todecide the launch of any particular feature of service. Softwareservice providers, on the other hand, are of a contrastive view. 57per cent of IT leaders said that IT acts as a joint decision-makeralong with stakeholders, while 59 per cent noted that they worked incollaboration with their business allies. To sum up, Forrester highlighted the following points in its industrysurvey:Businessesare exceedingly depending on software services to render innovativesolutions.Softwareservice providers are rendering incapable of developing solutions atthe rate which business leaders are demanding.Theservice delivery process is primarily slowed down because ofimmature development process and corporate culture.Ahandful of IT organizations are seeking aid of advanced continuousdelivery processes.Suggesting the need of an enhanced delivery process, the report saidthat if any organization has a team which has not even touched Level4 of the continuous delivery maturity model, its time to deviseways to get it there as soon as possible.
