Much of it comes down to the major printercompanies very cleverly recognizing that an opportunity existed to sell theactual printer unit at a massively reduced price, safe in the knowledge thatthere were ready made repeat sale requirements for the ink cartridges. Anexcellent marketing strategy, but one which ultimately has driven millions ofpeople right across the globe to use a remanufactured alternative, atdramatically lower costs of anything up to 60 % cheaper. Many people wrongly believe they are sacrificing quality in return forsaving some money, but in actual fact the remanufactured versions invariablynot only meet, but very often exceed, the Original Equipment Manufacturer's(OEM) quality. They are rebuilt from pre-used, empty cartridges, which aretaken to bits, new parts attached if necessary in a full repair process, andthen refilled with the ink. They last just as long, if not longer than theoriginals, partly because in another crafty move, the printers are sold withthe original cartridges sometimes only around 70% full.   There is no getting away from the fact that profit is the driving forcebehind the high charges, despite noises to the contrary from the marketleaders, who will argue that remanufactured cartridges to not reach the samelevel of quality, but they would say that to protect their profit margins. Inreality, it is only worthwhile spending extra cash if the prints required areof great value, or need to be of a high definition, otherwise if the usage isjust office or home based, then the difference is negligible and it makesperfect sense to get the cheaper option.  Perhaps in the past, the testing of the re-manufactured cartridges wasnot as thorough as it might have been, but technological advancements withultrasonic cleaning now mean that this is no longer an issue and the quality isof the highest standards. It is worth taking into consideration that many ofthe manufacturers will immediately invalidate the warranty on their product ifthey discover a non-original cartridge has been inserted into the printer. Thisis to maintain their standing in the market place, so it is probably advisableto ensure the source of the replacement cartridge is a reliable one. Obviously it is dependent upon the amount of printing that isundertaken, but unless you are absolutely determined to stick with the topprice original branded cartridge, the remanufactured choice is the logicalcourse to follow, as you get at least a 2 to 1 ratio. However, one of the mostobvious reasons to choose a remanufactured inkjet cartridge is the impact ithas on the environment. Everybody should be trying to do their bit and thisrecycling practice keeps enormous quantities of plastic from the landfills eachyear - this has to be a worthy excuse.
