UTC time has leap seconds added (or taken away) every yearor so to compensate with the slowing (and occasional speeding up) of the Earthsrotation as our planet is actually 100,000 times less reliable than an atomicclock and without leap seconds noon would eventually become midnight (albeit in40,000 years or so).Computers use a protocol called NTP (Network Time Protocol)which can receive a UTC time signal either through the Internet or via aspecialist radio transmission from a physics laboratory or via the GPS network.NTP servers then ensure that all devices connected to thatnetwork are synchronized to UTC allowing computers across the globe tocommunicate effectively with each other.
