Fall is in the air andthe school doors are about to open. For many, this year offers someunique challenges. Many schools are facing budget cuts and some personnelcuts. These reductions place greater pressure on the people whoremain. As demands increase but resources shrink, we face a world ripefor sticky situations.In the book, ManagingSticky Situations at Work, I described a school-related situation in which twoteachers had trouble working together. This example might represent atypical problem in many schools where teachers face one another all day and inthe teachers lounges. Another issue thattodays schools face is parent and teacher conflicts. Many parents expecttheir children to get a certain level of attention. Some expect theteacher to focus on their child completely. Some teachers, on the otherhand, expect parents to do things at home that overly stressed, dual-employedpeople might not be able to do. These expectations create conflict.What can you do if youfind yourself confronted with these kinds of sticky situations? Thinkabout the following three tips: Approach each situationwith the realization that you cannot change the other person. Change iswithin you. When you change, you shift the dynamic of therelationship. That causes a shift which could result in a behavior changein others. But, it may not. Second, go into allsituations with a healthy sense of curiosity. Learn why the parentscannot provide attention or support that you, as a teacher expect. As aparent, learn the reasons a teacher cannot sit with your child to soothehim after a disappointing experience. Listen with curiosity. You mightlearn a lot about the situation that you never realized. Third, show compassionfor the other person. Dont judge or blame. Judging and blamingclose off communication. When you go into the conversation wondering whatit must be like to be that other person, you can better relate to their pointof view.The school environment isripe with sticky situations. Its aplace where people must work in close proximity with few resources and limitedtime to communicate. Its like a verysmall community, where for everything to function, everyone must give andtake. The definition of conflict iswhen two people want to be in the same place, but theres room for onlyone. A child wants 2 hours of attentionand the teacher has 10 minutes. Alibrarian wants display space, and teachers want study-hall space. A parent wants tutoring for a special needschild, and tutors are already assigned. The list is endless. Change,curiosity and compassion will lead to healthier communication and ways toovercome these challenges.Furthermore, these tipswill not only help teachers deal with parents and parents with teachers, butthey will also help administrators deal with state officials and teachers withadministrators. In fact, if you go into any tough situation with the realizationthat you cannot change the other person, a genuine hunger to explore whatis really going on, and true compassion for the other person, you will be in abetter position to say it just right.
