Although it's true that Alltel was purchased by Verizon in January of 2009 and that since then much of Alltel's market has migrated to Verizon, there are still many markets in which Alltel continues to operate. One of these markets is that of their prepaid service.Alltel's prepaid plans cover three different tiers to fit various types of users. Subscribers can get a number of unlimited features for 75 cents per day, and can pay a quarter to add more. However, most of the available phone options for Alltel prepaid cell phones are a tad expensive, as is the $35 activation fee. Let's take a look at some of the details in Alltel's prepaid plans. There are three basic plans for Alltel prepaid cell phones. There is a pay per minute plan, a pay per day plan, and a pay per month plan. On the pay per day plan, all calls are 15 cents per minute, and there is a minimum $20 initial balance. The pay per day plan is a bit more complex. Each day costs the subscriber 75 cents, which will turn out to be between $22.50 and $23.25 each month. This plan allows the user to choose two additional options out of four. These options are: unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited favorite number calling, and unlimited text messaging. The third and fourth options can be added for an additional 25 cents apiece, and at $1.25 per day (maximum daily payment on this plan) the user will be paying between $35 and $38.75 a month. There are three monthly payment plans available for Alltel prepaid cell phones. One is $29.99 and offers 200 peak minutes alongside 1,000 night and weekend minutes. The $39.99 plan offers 400 peak minutes and 2,000 night and weekend minutes. The $69.99 plan offers 700 peak minutes, unlimited night and weekend minutes, unlimited mobile to mobile, and unlimited text messaging. For $5 extra per month on any of these plans, unlimited favorite number calling is available.Looking at these numbers, the maximum daily plan at $38.75 a month during months of 31 days is more extensive than the forty dollar monthly plan. In fact, the daily plan seems to offer the exact same benefits of the most expensive monthly plan possible at half the cost.Additionally to all of these plans, a lot of other details factor in. For all plans there is a 59 cent per minute roaming charge, which is something to look out for. Also, international calls are limited to Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico. However, this shouldn't matter very much unless you're in the regular habit of calling countries on the other side of the world. If you're in the habit of making calls across the country, though, you're in luck. All long distance calls within the US are treated as regular calls. Also, when Verizon bought Alltel the network was unlocked, meaning that you can service any phone with this wireless plan. Just because you have a prepaid plan doesn't mean you can't sport the newest Blackberries and iPhones.
