But what is Desktop Publishing (DTP) ? The short definition is The design and production of publications bymeans of specialized software enabling a microcomputer to generatetypeset-quality text and graphics. Inlaymans terms a more advanced form of word processing. Page-layout software would be the would bethe word processing equivalent of Microsoft Word, only while most often peopleuse Microsoft Word to type up one form of document, a word document,Page-Layout software involves a vast amount of complexity in the placement textand general graphics. A means to an endfor both literature, and pictures, covers, etc Think of how a magazine is designed. There is a cover, separate articles, and various text and graphicsthroughout. Page-layout software is themost instrumental tool in creating e-books. In our modern times, the term is used for publishing of anykind. Be it books, magazines, newspapers, websites, e-books. Itimplies a more professional looking result than simple word processing andinvolves skills in graphic design. Inthe early 80s, in a newpaper company a man anmed James Bessen founded TypeProcessor One, an IBM program for WYSIWYG display, and sold commercially to thepublic in 1984. With the advent of thisPage-Layout program, the Desktop Publishing market blew up in 1985 with bigname companies as far reaching as Apple cashed in on the new phenomenon, thuschanging the very foundation of the publishing industry worldwide. Before Desktop Publishing, humanity used anage old technology for typed documents: the typewriter. The ability tocreate WYSIWYG page layouts on screen, and then print them at a high 300 dpiresolution changed blew open the typesetting industry and personal computerindustry in a matter of months. Almostevery newspaper company in the United States made the switch to DTP-basedprograms from the older inefficient layout systems of the early 1980s Today, the early desktop publishing of the 80s is quiteprimitive. Back then however DesktopPublishing itself was considered a primary skill. Today it is but a secondary skill to artisticdirection in graphics, and general multimedia and marketing skills. Skills range from IT related skills likeprogramming and prepress production, to creative skills like graphic andcommunication design. Graphic Design isthe process and art of mixing text and graphics in communicating an effectivemessage in logos, graphics, posters, signs and other various types of visualcommunication. Desktop Publishing is theprocess of using a computer and specific types of software to combine text andgraphics to produce documents such as newsletters, brochures, books etc.. Although the two are very similar in nature, they are different things, and each industry has developed differently over theyears. Some famous DTP applications oftoday are Microsoft Publisher, OpenOffice.org, PageMaker (along with a wholeslew of Adobe DTP products like InDesign and FrameMaker), iStudio publisher,CorelDRAW, Pages (by Apple), PagePlus, QuarkXPress, and The Print Shop. Some of these are free or close to no cost atall such as OpenOffice (open source software) and others have a price thatclimbs as high as $1000 like Adobe FrameMaker.
