The truth is, dull axes do not have much work value, and can be dangerous to use. An axe really is worthless with out a proper edge. To sharpen an axe, steps must be taken to address every possible issue based on the current condition of the edge. So let’s start the steps based on a axe that has edge damage.Step one is when there is a damaged edge, it must be shaped again. Use a clamp to secure the axe head, and make sure the vice is well mounted. Start the process of creating an original edge by using a file. An axe file can be bought online, and is highly recommended. Make sure to go slow, and do not over heat the edge. Stop several times to let the head cool off, and then continue. Sharpen the head by pushing the file away from yourself. Do not pull, push in just one direction. Do not attempt to handle the edge with bare hands, and as you end the push, lift the file away from the edge, do not pull it away. Be sure to have the edge and file be free of dust and filings. Shake them off each push, and push only in one direction, it’s Very important. Once you see a burr on the edge, you can go to step two. Then you can get into grinding. This is great for reversing minor damage, and let’s you restore sharpness by using a whetstone bench grinder. We suggest a Arkansas whetstone, and then to lubricate with oil. When you are doing the grinding, it’s important to always keep the true bevel shape. It makes no difference what whetstone you use, it is important to move the axe slowly to and fro while the grinder takes the bevel back to it’s true shape. At the end stage, you will hone the edge tip. So using a coarse stone first, and then a finer stone. Work the stones from the axe head side to the cutting edge. Always lift on the back stroke so as to not get injured. Do you best to preserve the true shape of the axe edge. If you deform the shape, you lose work level, and face injuries if very deformed. Please use a you tube video to actually watch a pro in action, and read other techniques.
