Sometimes we get carried away with work for the sake of work. We seem to be unable to stop and when we stop momentarily something happens that drags us back in.Workaholism can be destructive. There is an old proverb that most people are familiar with, “Don’t work hard, work smart”. There is a lot of wisdom in that and if we follow it we can become vastly more productive. The problem is that many people ignore it.Whether you are working at home or are a 9-to-5er, there are a number of guidelines you can use to minimise the chances of becoming a workaholic and instead focus on increasing your productivity. These guidelines are as follows.1. Unplug. These days we seem to work a lot with computers and are constantly connected to the net either through a PC or using smart phones. These devices keep us informed and for a lot of people are the primary ways to work. The downfall is that over time we get conditioned on these devices. As soon as you sit behind your computer, you get an urge to check your emails. When you check your email, you get an urge to reply to one which you think is important. Before you know, you find yourself back and forward in email conversations and are back to working mode. This is particularly important if you use the same device for work and personal life, such as a laptop. To get out of this cycle, you need to have multiple devices or a very strong discipline (or both). Use one device for work and another for personal stuff or entertainment. When you are not behind your work device, avoid any temptation to access anything related to work. This will automatically prevent you from drifting to work mode even when you are in your own time.2. Focus 100%. Focus 100% on everything you do. If you are working, focus your entire attention on work and don’t let yourself to drift to any other subject. Equally, when you are having fun or are on holiday, focus 100% of your mind on just having fun. This simple trick will increase the quality of your life to 100%. You simply choose what you want to do and you really go for it. Because you immerse yourself in each activity, you always get a lot more out of it than you would otherwise.3. Socialise. Think of socialisation as a tool to get more information from others while expressing yourself to others. If you are suffering from too much work, a social activity can be refreshing, can recharge your batteries, give meaning to life and also help you to keep your relationships healthy so you can use them for a rainy day.4. Participate in Sport. Never forget that your mind and body and part of the same system that you use to go through life. When one suffers, the other follows too. A weak physical body is fatigued and leads to a slow and less creative mind that over time become lazy. On the other hand a competitive and active sport can help you to learn how to stay focused, push yourself to the limit of your abilities and learn to be goal-oriented.5. Have a Clear Objective and Mission Statement. Don’t work for the sake of work. What is it you want to achieve? Are you working to make money? If money is the main reason for your job, is your job the most ideal way of making money? If money is not the key, why do you have to spend the best part of your life for the small amount of money that you might receive in exchange for your valuable time? What do you want to tell your grandchildren about your life when you become old? Knowing what you want helps you to know how to get there and if what you are doing is getting you any closer to that objective.
