Most authors have trouble navigating the waters of thepublishing world. They need to work through the uncharted waters of agents, editors, and rejection. I think it is a shipwreck waiting to happen and it happensoften. Many authors are frustrated by the process and get lost in the waves. This is partially because publishers accepting unsolicited manuscripts are hardto find if not impossible. If they are found then there quality is sometimessuspect as well, or they arent actual publishers, but vanity publishers. The publishing industry has been stuck in the mentality ofnot accepting unsolicited manuscripts for so long I am not really sure theywill ever go back to thinking about changing their policy. Even though in thisday and age, publishers accepting unsolicited manuscripts are needed more thanever. Self-publishing has only just started to shake thepublishing industry. We havent even begun to see the effects this will have onbooks and publishing. Who will really be the publisher in 5 or 10 years fromnow? Will there be there giant publishers dictating what we read or will it besingle authors printing books and marketing deciding what we read. I think itmust be somewhere in between. The big publishers standard of not acceptingunsolicited manuscripts and the unregulated self-publishing cant stay aroundforever. There needs to be a shift and change in the industry and theshift needs to occur from either individual authors or the big publishers.Although either doing this is doubtful. If publishers accepting unsolicited manuscripts begin tocreate a system where they can efficiently sort through the pile of manuscriptsthey are receiving there is a good chance they will prevail in the publishingindustry while others fail. If they can build a reputation while they do it.I hope to see some positive changes in the publishingindustry in the future, but will hold my breath since I doubt that there willbe any changes.
