Binding thick documents can be tricky nomatter which binding method you choose. However, color coil binding canbe particularly challenging due to the flexible nature of the coils.Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make things easier foryourself. Here is some information to get you started: First, you need to know that coils range in diameter from 6 to 50 millimeters. The largest coils can be used to bind documents that are up to 440pages long. Be sure to pick a coil that is large enough to allow thepages to turn freely when the document is bound. Also, since coils areavailable in a lot of colors, the coil should complement the document'scovers and/or title page. Now youneed to punch holes in your document. You can either use your coilbinding machine or a modular punch for this. Whatever device you use,it will have a specific punching capacity that indicates the number ofsheets it can punch at a time. Don't exceed the punching capacity. Ifyou do, it can damage the machine's punching dies over time. If yourdocument is particularly thick, you may want to consider usingpre-punched paper to save some time. Onceyour document has been punched, it's time to bind it. But first of all,you should curve the binding edge of the document to make coilinsertion a lot easier. Some coil binding machines have a specialchannel to help you do this. You can also use a book former or abinding sleeve. After curving thespine of your document, you need to insert the coil. You can do thismanually although it can be a bit tricky due to the size of the book. You are better off using a coil inserter. Just spin the coil throughthe first few holes in your work and then let the inserter take care ofthe rest. Once the coil has beeninserted into the holes in your document, you will need to crimp eachend of the coil. You can do this with a pair of crimping pliers. (Somecoil binding machines come with a pair of these pliers. If you need apair, it's possible to buy them a la carte.) Hold the pliers in yourhand with the red dot facing up and make sure the coil is facing you.Crimp one end of the coil, making sure to slightly curl it in. (Thishelps secure the binding.) Then, turn your document over and repeat theprocess on the other side of the coil. Throw away the little bits ofplastic and admire your work because you are done! Bindingthick documents with color coils might seem tricky at first but it willget easier with practice. Curving the spine of your document is reallythe best way to make the process easier, so make sure you do it everytime you bind. Good luck with your projects!
