One of the best ways to keep your books in good shape is by storingthem properly. It's best to store them either flat or upright, preferably in a bookcase. (Don't pack them in too tightly!) If yourbooks are leaning at an angle when they're not in use, you might findthat they become misshapen. You don't want that to happen. Keep them clean. It's a good idea to make sure your hands are clean before handling yourpaperbacks. That way, you won't end up with a mustard stain on page 168of your favorite novel. Also, you should consider dusting your books ona regular basis. Run your duster or cloth along the edges of the pagesbefore dusting the spine. This prevents dust from settling in betweenthe pages. Keep them dry.It almost goes without saying that water and books don't go together.Water will warp your paperbacks and can make them unreadable, so it'simportant to keep them dry. Sometimes when you buy a new book, you'll find that it's so tightlybound that it's difficult to read. If this happens, you might betempted to crack the book's spine for easier reading. However, thisisn't recommended as it can cause the book to fall apart. Instead, fanthe pages several times to break it in. Repair damaged books with a thermal binding machine. Ifyou have books that are falling apart, it's possible to repair themwith a thermal binding machine. That's because the machine willre-activate the adhesive in the spine, so the book can be essentiallyre-bound. To use one of these machines, turn it on and wait for it towarm up. When it's ready, place your book in the machine. (The spineshould be facing down.) Run the book through a binding cycle and thenremove it from the machine. Tap the spine against a hard edge to securethe pages and let the book cool off. Keep in mind that some books maynot have enough adhesive in them for rebinding. If that's the case foryou, stick a thermal binding glue strip in the spine before placing thebook in your binding machine. Extending the life of your paperback books is easy when you use theabove tips. Give them a try so you can enjoy your books for a long timeto come.
