Garage doors are the large gates that allow the passage of humans and automobiles into the house. They can either be manual or automatic. A manual garage door is a traditional door that is opened by humans but as the time passed and advancement in every field, the automatic garage doors are also available. Anyhow if you want to get your garage door removed for one reason or another then its not that difficult to do so. If you are converting your garage into living space, removing the garage door is one of the first major jobs you will face. The open space can be filled with a patio door, or you can frame a new wall and add a window. Most garages have four or five sections joined by hinges that pivot as the door is raised or lowered. The doors move on rollers inside of tracks that run up the side of the door and overhead.Removing the door is not difficult, but it does require more than two hands. Plan to have a helper or two available for some of the steps that follow.Garage doors use springs to ease the lifting and lowering. There are two types of spring mechanisms. Extension springs are located above the upper tracks on both sides. Torsion springs are attached to the header directly above the closed door. If you have extension springs, proceed to the next step. If you have torsion springs, call a garage door professional to release the tension. Then if you have an electric garage-door opener, unplug it and disconnect wires running to the switch. Pull the release cord and disconnect the support arm from the garage door. While a helper holds it steady, remove the bolts securing the trolley to the wall or ceiling on one side and the power unit on the other. Remove the bolts holding the power unit to the ceiling and then remove all other hardware supporting the unit. Finally, remove the opener. To disassemble the springs, raise the door and attach clamps to the tracks on both sides to prevent the door from rolling down once the springs are removed. Tape or tie each spring to the track, then use pliers to remove the lift cables from the lower brackets on each side. Disassemble the spring and pulley assemblies. While one or two helpers hold the door in place, remove the clamps. Set a block of wood under the door landing to keep from pinching your fingers and then lower the door. Working from top to bottom, remove the brackets holding the door sections together and the roller hinges on each side. Remove the top section and repeat the process on the next section.Use a hammer to remove the jambs on both sides of the door. This should expose the existing curb and wall framing resting on top of it. These are those simple steps that are to be followed to get the garage door removed for whatever reason it may be.
