More than just a handy office tool, deskside shredders are quickly becoming a necessity in today's world.Identity theft and corporate espionage are just two reasons that anyemployees of yours who have the need to destroy confidentialinformation on a regular basis should have a shredder in a convenientplace, and ready to use when they need it. Here we are going to take alook at Destroyit's entry into the deskside shredder market, theDestroyit 2260, and list some of the machine's advantages anddisadvantages. Pros: We liked how the Destroyit 2260 starts and stopsautomatically with the use of a photocell that senses when the user isputting paper into the feed. There is also a multifunction switch thatcontains a small light denoting whether the machine is in standby, stopor reverse. We found this to be a nice little feature on an entry levelshredder.Safety is always an issue when you are using ashredder, and to that end, the Destroyit 2260 has a transparent shieldin the paper feed opening that keeps hands, fingers, and neckties outof the cutting mechanism. We were thinking this was a great and veryimportant, especially for deskside shredders, where you might notalways be looking at your hands. Also, the machine cuts off immediatelywhen the shred bin is removed from the cabinet, and when the shredderhead is lifted from the bin. All nice safety features.Noiseis always a consideration when you are shopping for a shredder, and wefound that, for such a powerful little shredder, the 2260 ran prettyquietly. This is, of course, a big plus in a crowded office, or if themachine will be used often. The cutting shafts appear to be of a very high quality, and they accepted paper clips and staples without any problems.The5 gallon bin is not a bad capacity for a smaller shredder. What weliked most, though, was the cool green opaque window which allows userto see how full the bin is, and that the removable design would seem toeliminate the need for plastic shred bags. Less plastic means moregreen. The Destroyit 2260 comes in a solid, high quality wooden casing that we thought was pretty classy. Cons: With no handles or casters, the Destroyit 2260 is not as easy to move about the office as it might be. Whilewe like how the machine stops when the bin is opened, some ofDestroyit's other models come with a function that does the same whenthe bin is too full. While perhaps the presence of the viewing windowmakes this feature not as necessary, we still think it would have beennice to have included this feature. While the 2260 boastsof having " double overheating protection," we would like to have aclearer idea of how long the machine can be used before it needs acooling down period. While the 2260 never seemed to come close tooverheating during our tests, it would be nice to know how long we cantypically use it. Recommendation: For a single use deskside shredder, the Destroyit 2260 has some prettynice features and measures up pretty well to competing shredders on themarket. Article Tags: Destroyit 2260
