When photographing portraits, pay attention to the details. This article offers ideas on details new photographers should consider incorporating into their work. 1. When posing people of similar shape try not to pose their bodies in a similar way. For example if you are photographing three sisters who look similar have one sit so her shoulders are facing to the left another so her shoulders are facing more to the right and the third more squarely facing the camera. This makes for a much more interesting composition than showing the exact same side of each sister. 2. Remind your clients to maintain good posture throughout the photo shoot. 3. Be aware of the size of your subjects. Again if you have three sisters and one of the sisters is physically bigger then the others and you put her in the most prominent position in the composition she will overpower the over two as far as eye attention is concerned. There needs to be a balance in the way in which subjects are photographed. 4. Pay attention to the positioning of hands. When looking at a portrait the eye naturally looks at faces first and then hands. If you have a hand posed to show an open palm or back of the hand facing the camera it can look as large as face. Generally the most attractive view of the hand is the semi-flat view of the hand with the side pinky side facing the camera. 5. When you are posing someone in such a way that the person's hand is around another person's back and on their shoulder, make sure the hand does not go all the way around the shoulder with the entire back side of the hand showing (non-palm side). The hand in this position will look large and will draw attention away from the face (since being around the back it will be so close to the face). The photography industry is extremely competitive. By paying attention to the details in your portrait photography, you can make a good image excellent. The above are a few details which can help enhance your portraits.
