The splitter has arange of adjustments that you can use to maximize its effectiveness. Toaccess the menu press either scroll button the machine. You can togglethrough the menu selections using the scroll buttons, and makeselections with the green Start button. The Fastback S41 has settingsfor Depth, Rate, Pass Mode, Jogging and Compression. This article willexplain these different settings to help you better understand how toadjust your Powis edge splitter. Option #1: Depth This controls the depth of the channel that is created when you splityour paper. Harder paper stock may require deeper settings than normal.Softer paper stocks may require lighter settings. When setting thedepth it is important to remember that using a split that is too deepcan be detrimental to the paper and can cause binding problems. It isalways best to use the lightest split possible. You can choose fromthree settings for depth including: light depth, normal depth and heavydepth. Option #2: Rate Rate controls howmany times the splitter teeth strike the paper during each pass. Thethickness of the paper is the determining factor in setting the rate.Thicker paper may require a coarser setting, while very thin papershould use a fine rate setting. Attempting to use a coarse rate when afine rate is recommended can result in unsplit pages and may interferewith the bind quality. You can choose between three different rates forthis setting including: coarse rate, normal rate and fine rate. Option #3: Pass Mode Pass mode controls how many times the splitter teeth travel across thepaper edge during operation. Difficult to bind papers typically requiretwo passes, while papers that are less problematic may require onepass. However, using the one pass mode when the normal two pass mode isrecommended may interfere with the bind quality since your pages maynot be completely split. You can choose either the light mode (1 pass)or normal mode (2 pass) for this option. Option #4: Jogging The jogging menu lets you choose whether the jogging feature is alwayson, always off, or in the normal pre-jog mode. Under the Normal Pre-Jogsetting, the jogging shuts off as soon as the green button is pressed,allowing the paper to stabilize prior to clamping. Applying lightpressure to the top of the paper during the jogging and when you pressthe green button to keep the sheets from bouncing before they areclamped. You can choose from three different settings for the Joggingoption: Jog Off, Normal Pre-Jog or Jog On. Option #5: Compression The compression setting controls the compression of the paper after itis split. The normal setting compresses all books over ¼" thick. Youcan either turn this feature off, or turn it on for all book blocks.However, turning compression off may interfere with bind quality,especially for books greater than ¼" thick. You can choose from threedifferent compression settings on the edge splitter: Compress Off,Normal Compress or Compress All.
