Buckhead was incorporated within Atlanta in 1952. This was not the first time that officials tried to incorporate Buckhead to Atlanta. In 1942 William B. Hartsfield tried to incorporate Buckhead into Atlanta but was voted down by the people. However, in 1952 it became a reality, Buckhead did become part of Atlanta.Peachtree road is the main North-South Street, which changes to Peach Street and takes you right into the heart of Atlanta. The change of the street name is important because it defines the border between Buckhead and midtown Atlanta. West Paces Ferry Road is the main East-West Street. Buckhead's North area runs beyond the city limits of Atlanta and is called Sandy Springs. The name Paces stems from Hardy Paces who once ran a ferry across the Chattahoochee River. He was also one of Atlanta's founders and at one time owned much of the land that is called Buckhead today.During the 80's the Village area experienced a downward turn. To help alleviate this Buckhead's Council made it easier to obtain a liquor license. This soon led to the area becoming the most densely populated place in Buckhead for bars and clubs. With this came an increase of crime in the 90's. In 2004 the residents took back their peace and quiet by once again reducing bar hours from 4 pm. to 2 pm. and placing a restriction on Liquor licenses which made them more difficult to obtain. Today Buckhead still maintains the title of Atlanta's entertainment district and it is the place to be if you're visiting Atlanta.Buckhead's historical shopping districts are the Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza. They are located across from Peachtree Road. They house more than 350 boutiques and offer the highest concentration of shopping boutiques and restaurants in the United States. It boasts 1400 retail stores where more than a billion dollars are spent every year. A new shopping centre is in the making and will be known as The Streets of Buckhead, which will also bring a host of other exclusive hotels and boutiques.Today Buckhead's citizens have an average income in excess of $341,000 per year and have the wealthiest neighborhoods in Atlanta. It is home to the Governor's Mansion and the Real Estate here is the most expensive in Georgia.
