SMPS stands for switched-mode power supply, switching-mode poweSMPS stands forSwitched Mode Power Supply or switching-mode power supply. SMPS is a powersupply unit (PSU) for electronic use that contains a switchingregulator. While a linear regulator maintains the desired outputvoltage by dissipating excess power in a "pass" powertransistor, the SMPS switches a power transistor at the faster ratebetween saturation (full on) and cutoff (completely off) with avariable duty cycle whose average is the desired output voltage.
