Gospel singers have been around for ages, blessing the ears of their listeners with powerful words and sweet melodies. Gospel music encompasses many different styles of voices and instruments, allowing for a wide variety of music to fit into this particular genre. However, one thing remains the same with gospel music despite its variety, which is the fact that gospel musicians sing with the gospel message at the heart of each song. Here are 3 of the greatest gospel singers. Mahalia Jackson Mahalia Jackson is one of the most loved and well-respected gospel singers of all time, and is even considered the queen of this genre by many. Born in 1911 in New Orleans, she got her start in gospel music early in life by singing at church. She sang throughout her entire life, vowing only ever to sing gospel music. Jackson had a large impact on the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and teamed up with activists such as Martin Luther King, Jr. to help fight for the rights of fellow African Americans. She passed away in 1972 at the age of 61, but her beautiful gospel music has continued to live on. Doris Akers Doris Akers is another household name in gospel music, and is known for being an excellent composer and arranger, along with being a fabulous singer. She was born in Brookfield, Missouri in 1923, and like her friend, Mahalia Jackson, became familiar with gospel music at a young age through the influence of her church. Akers teamed up with various singing groups throughout her career, but she is most recognized for her efforts in directing the Sky Pilot Choir. She made several recordings throughout her lifetime, and in her later years became a Minister of Music. Akers passed away in 1995, but her powerful musical influence still impacts many people today. Cece Winans Cece Winans, also known as Priscilla Marie Winans Love, is a well-known gospel singer that has risen to fame in recent years. She was born in 1964 in Detroit, Michigan, and began her singing career in 1995. Winans has won several awards over the years, including a Grammy. Some of her other accomplishments include having written several books, and judging a gospel music competition on television. Winans currently lives with her husband and two children in Brentwood, Tennessee, and co-pastors alongside her husband at their local church. Her music is widely played today on many Christian radio stations. Gospel singers such as the ones listed above have impacted and influenced the music scene for generations, and will continue to do so for years to come. The touching lyrics, powerful presentations, and unique compositions are some of the reasons why this music appeals to so many people. The music itself is relatable and timeless, much like the singers who sing it. The list is almost endless in terms of great gospel singers, but Mahalia Jackson, Doris Akers, and Cece Winans are some of the greatest. These 3 singers have helped to shape the world of gospel music forever.
