Are youtired of being stuck in the rut of doing things the way theyve always beendone? Are you ready to shake things up a bit, but hesitate because of theuncertainty in the economy? Youremissing the point if youre focusing only on whats gone. And youre missingthe point if you bemoan the fact that the past 100 years of nonstop advertisinghas conditioned us into a constant thirst for the next new thing. This isactually good newsfor you! The gap between boredom andnovelty, along with the decentralization of power resulting from the Internetrevolution, has created a huge opportunity for you to set yourself free to bemore creative. You canexpress your creativity in 3 ways: Innovate.Create somethingnew based on something thats already on the market. You can upgradeadd toan existing model, like therecliner added new features to the chair. Or you can make something easier touse or more attractive by subtracting features, like the iPod stripped-down the mp3 player. Invent. Come up with something that hasnever existed before. Henry Ford didnt innovate a faster horse, he invented awhole new class of transportation: the automobile. Create. Express a talent or skill, like singing, painting, writing, building, etc.As Im fondof pointing out, the marketplace has proven time and again: the thing thatyields the highest ROI (return on investment) is passion. When itcomes to innovation, you dont need a permission slip signed by your mommy tochange the rules, to raise the bar, or to play a different game. You have moreindividual leverage today than ever before.Rattlingthe cage of the status quo can be profitable and fun. And its a boost to yourcareer to push the edge of whatever envelope you find intriguing. However, when youre ready to embrace your innovative nature, self-doubt can creep in.Your desire to express your creativity will wither on the vine. Butremember, youve already disproved your doubts hundreds of times by going afterand getting what you want. Like leg cramps, you can walk doubt off. When yourepassionate about something, your innate creativity is immune to doubt. It wontstop cranking out ways to get what you want until youve got it.The main thing thatprevents your passion from flowering is the confidence that you can do it, that its worth doing or that you wont crash and burn in the process of doing it.The oldexcuses that youre not motivated enough, smart enough or trying hard enoughare only a smokescreen. Just as confidence plays a role in how capable you feelof attaining your desires, your level of confidence will dictate howcreative you believe you are. When your confidence is weak, your creativity will be, too. And youre justshooting yourself in the foot if you say: Oh, Im just not a creativeperson. What yourereally saying is that youve not yet discovered something you have passion for.Once you know your passion, the steps toward it will become clear as you headin that direction. The oldexcuseyou dont got gamedoesnt hold water any more. A quick glance aroundany group of people will show you how passion inspires the genius to compensatefor skills, talents, resources or genes you dont think you have, and thus tothrive in new situations. Using passion as your guide, youll be more creative, thereby offsetting any limitations of ability and novelty. Its time.Make the choice. Everyone Ive coached who made the choice was glad they did.Their only regret was that they didnt do it sooner. My only regret is that Idont have more feet, so I could wear more shoes (just kidding).Coaching Question:Whats the next step in expressing your passion in a more creative, innovativeor inventive way?
