Heres wherethings get tricky. You may have two different internal conversations going on.You have strong feelings about both the need to play it safe and the need totake on a fresh challenge. One of themost common questions I get is, How do I tell the difference between what mymind is thinking and what my intuition is saying?Learning howyour intuition communicates is the first step toward learning to hear, trustand follow it. Intuitive thoughts arevery different from mental thoughts, which spin in a cyclone of fear, cynicaldoubts and jaded opinions. When your gut tells you to give it a shot, your headwill retort with reasons why you cant or shouldnt. Here are some examples ofreasons you cant act on yourhunch: Youre tooscared (of failure, of actual or perceived threats; of losing something) You donthave the necessary resources (e.g., I cant start my own business because Idont have time to do the research and I dont have the money). Reasons you shouldnt act on your hunch include: Memories ofsimilar experiences that bombed Presentcircumstances that stop you (e.g., In this economy, I shouldnt quit my job).Conversely, intuitivethoughts are much shorter, more telegraphic. Instead of a whole conversation, agut response to the question of what to do next is one of only two words: yes(also, go) or no (a.k.a., stop). The emotionsthat accompany these responses fall into the range of an open, excited feelingthat follows yes, toa shrinking, slightly repelled feeling that goes along with no.Its this thumbsup, thumbs down natureof intuition that causes doubt. You can get totally bogged down by the naggingneed to know exactly how youre going to get what you want. Its humannature to want to see every step along the way at the outset. Thats why youfind it hard to trust that everythings going to work out fine when it meansstepping out of your comfort zone and into the unknown. Since you canttrust what you cant hear, lets begin with enhancing your ability to hear your hunches. Step 1: Create a conducive environment for physical andmental relaxation and opennessthe ideal state to receive and integrate newinformation. Listening to yourintuition is easier when youre not distracted by your environment. So minimizethe noiseyour computer, TV, stereo and phone. If you feela strong connection to nature, then being outdoors is ideal. If you findthe outdoors distracting, a restful space where you can be alone with yourthoughts is just the ticket. From churches to warm bubble baths, any place youfeel comfortable and contemplative is the perfect place for you. Step 2: When you are in your ideal environment, prepareyourself physically and mentally. Take a few deep breaths.Relax. Synchronize thephysical, mental and intuitive activity. While some people are able to sitstill, clear their mind and listen, the rest of us (me included) benefit fromsome kind of slow movement When I concentrate on theslow, gentle, controlled movement of part of my body, I feel my thoughtshunches getting into sync with the flow of moving. Here are some examples. walking very slowly swaying back and forth(standing or sitting) blowing bubbles (relaxedbreathing) rubbing a smooth stone(a variation on rosary beads) with clasped handsresting in your lap, gently tapping your thumbs together in a bubble bath, gentlysqueezing a handful of bubbles or slowly tapping your toes against the tile. Now that youre listening, lets run down a few tips on building trust in your intuition so you can moveinto action. As human beings, we trust what we can see. So its hard to trustintuition because it isnt visible. Thisexercise will help you make your intuition more concrete, thereby enhancingyour ability to trust it.Step 1:Assess your current level of trust. Its critical to be honest with yourself about the level of trustyou have right now. Although you might wish you trusted your vibes completely, you cant act confidently on ideas you cant trust. Rank yourcurrent level of trust on a scale from 1-10 (with 10 being highest). Just picka number; dont overthink it. This will be the baseline youll compare futureratings to. Come back and rank it again in a few months. This exercise is aquick way to take the temperature of your trust.Step 2:Give credit where credit is due. Its common to pay little attention to the role our intuitionplays in making decisions. Youve had dozensif not hundredsof hunches duringyour lifetime. Think backon the times you trusted your gut and things worked out well. And conversely, recall the times you ignored your hunch and things didnt go well. Write themall down. Make anotherlist of the decisions youve made by combining your intellectual, logical mindAND your intuition. This written evidence is a fabulous visual reminder of yourintuitions track record. From todayforward, write down every new desire that pops into your head. Then write downevery gut feeling you get about it. Track those feelings over time. Taking thetime to listen to your gut feelings will help you feel more confident in thebig decisions and small choices you make every day.
