The awesome power of self-suggestion If we can understand and put into practice self-suggestion or auto-suggestion, the benefits can be immense. This process deserves to be studied and thoroughly understood if we are serious about changing and improving our behavior and state in life. The rewards are so great and lasting that we should not hesitate to master the principles of this phenomenon. The benefits that I have received have been immeasurable.A suggestion is a stimulus that appeals directly to our feelings. The stronger the feelings that are aroused the more successful the outcome will be. Suggestions should appeal to the imagination, not the reason. It is vital that the suggestions are accepted without question; otherwise the process will not work. Not only must suggestions be strong and appealing, they need a lot of repetition to be successfully imprinted in an indelible manner on the subconscious mind. A successful suggestion depends on a strong imagination to deliver the goods.Of course suggestions can be harmful as well as beneficial to us and unfortunately we tend to make use of negative suggestions far more often than positive ones. We should make a solid resolution right now to employ suggestions that will yield a fruitful harvest for us and make this practice an everyday part of our life. At the beginning, experimentation is a necessary part of the learning process in regards to finding out which suggestions suit us best. What is ideal for one person may be totally wrong for another. We should make a note of the kinds of suggestions that we respond most readily or appeal most to us. After this period of trial and error we should be in a better position to judge which suggestions resonate with us most and therefore will effect a greater change in us.Feelings and emotions are deeper and stronger than logic or reason. Anything that makes a strong appeal to our emotions can effect profound change even though it goes against our reasoning powers. When logic and feelings are in conflict, the feelings always win. What we think of ourselves on an ongoing basis is the strongest of all suggestions. It has a profound effect on us and dictates our behavior. If the sentiments are good and positive then we will expand and be fulfilled in our lives. However if we constantly entertain negative feelings and suggestions we will underachieve and attract unhappiness into our existence. The negative thoughts we harbor are often misplaced but nevertheless these will be accepted by our subconscious mind which will then seek to perpetuate this mistake. Thus, if we have a false negative image of ourselves or grossly underestimate our value, all our thoughts and actions will reflect this mistaken belief. If we are convinced we are inferior in some way this can lead to untold worry and misery. We often spend our time trying to be something different to what we perceive ourselves to be. Very often we are ashamed of what we really think we are and will spend our life acting out a charade or pretence. We have to change this flow of destructive negative suggestions if we are serious about improving our state in life. We may have these negative feelings for so long that we make the mistake of believing that they were inborn in us. We must reject any belief that our former ways of thinking and feeling were somehow natural or inevitable. We can change this belief or perception if we put our minds to it.Understanding why we are unhappy or underachieving is the first step on the road to healing and improvement in our lives. When we grasp the fact that it is our mistaken beliefs that have lead us to this point, then we can begin to reeducate ourselves. We should be watchful for any negative suggestions that may crop up in our minds. They have to be eliminated and replaced by suggestions which will expand our horizons and make us feel good about ourselves. This new way of thinking will take time, effort and persistence. However if we constantly keep in our imagination the desired results we will surely get there. There is no greater satisfaction in life than to master ourselves and our destiny. It is a peril of great price.A word of caution is urged at this point. It is important to use our imagination in a correct manner and not try to live in a dream world. Everybody daydreams now and again and build castles in the air. It is enjoyable and good fun. However we must differentiate between fact and fantasy. We must avoid getting all our enjoyment in life from farfetched fancies so much that the pleasure we get becomes a substitute for the real thing. We all know people who give themselves airs about things. They like us to believe that they are brilliant at music, literature or art but in reality they have little talent. These people use their imagination in a childish way and derive a lot of pleasure from it. However they are living in a fantasy world and if continued this behavior can become harmful. They tend to mix their imaginings with reality and can get increasingly confused. They may become neurotic if they continue in this vein. They will try to escape from the real world with all its challenges and obstacles by becoming immersed in their dreams. The correct way of using our imagination is the very opposite of this. Yes, we do dream about things and thoroughly enjoy the dream but with the intention of making that dream a reality in the near future. We use the dream to stimulate us and prod us into action. It makes us ambitious and drives us on to achieving our goal. We must ensure that we are not getting pleasure from just imagining nice outcomes but rather from the doing and achieving of things that we previously imagined. When we make little advances along the road of progress we can then see the difference between pointless daydreams and real goal achievement.
