The profession we know aslocksmithing might seem like a rather recent concept, but in fact itstretches back hundreds of years. The concept of locks themselves, however, are almost as old as civilization itself. As soon as humansbegan living close to each other and amassing large amounts ofpossessions we seem to have simultaneously acquired the need to keepthings secret and private from each other. While the concept ofpersonal privacy did not really exist in its modern form until the19th century, the concept of secrecy is older than humans,as we can see whenever a squirrel buries a nut to ensure another onecan't have it.In the sense that locks themselves areso old, locksmithing as a profession can technically be said to havebegun four thousand years ago in Egypt. These locks were wooden andkeyless and were not improved until the Assyrian empire over athousand years later in the Mesopotamian Iron Age. This earlykey-based lock was discovered in the palace of the great emperorSargon II. Like many technological developments, lock making took along time to advance in the ancient world, and it so it took almostanother thousand years for metal locks to be developed in AncientRome. These collectives of highly skilledmaster workers gathered together to protect the interests of theirprofessions, and as such they can be seen as precursors to the laborunions of today in some ways. Like labor unions, these goal of theseguilds was always to preserve the interests of their members, and inmany cases this conflicted with technological advancement. Thelocksmiths who belonged to their guilds wanted to ensure they wouldnot be mistreated by customers or the political establishment whilesimultaneously keeping the standards of locks high. This meant theywould create rigid controls over what could be produced by alocksmith or called a lock.By the European Industrial Revolutionthe strict controls placed on technological advancement had beenwashed away. New types of locksmithing technologies were beingcreated every decade to replace and add to old models that had beenaround for thousands of years. The first step in this rapid series ofimprovements was the invention of the tumbler lock in 1778. Manyother impressive designs followed, including the time lock almost acentury later, as well as the pin tumbler lock, one of the mostcommon types to this day.Locksmithing has always tried to keepup with lock picking, and as such the two are inevitably tied.Locksmiths are highly trained to be able to pick many different kindsof locks in order to make sure their lock making skills stay fresh. It is important to keep your home protected from potential thieves,so hire a good locksmith today.
