"Escada" comes from the Portuguese word for "staircase." The company's signature style of brightly colored and unusually styled patterns was quickly embraced by the public, along with their distinctive embroidery and elaborate knits. As the company's popularity grew, they quickly expanded their selection and clothing lines to keep up with the demand.Margaretha Ley was born in 1933 in Sweden. A former Miss Sweden, she studied with the designer for the Swedish Royal Court before leaving for Paris to make her mark in the world of fashion modeling. Along the way, she studied the arts of draping and cutting and developed her own signature style. She eventually took over the knitwear company owned by her first husband, following his death. Wolfgang Ley was her second husband. The couple married in 1976.With Margaretha and Wolfgang at the helm, Escada launched a number of smaller lines, including:-- Laurel, launched in 1980, a line of clothing known for its youthful styling and mid-level pricing-- Crisca, launched in 1984, a full-service salon-- Apriori, a womenswear bridge line introduced in 1991Unfortunately, Margaretha passed away in 1992 at age 59. Following the loss of their chief designer and visionary, the company struggled, selling off lines and assets. The company eventually prevailed on the strength of its reputation and quality of its product and remains a major player today.In 1994, the company launched the sportswear line, Escada Sport, along with a line of high-end accessories such as bags and shoes. Escada also licenses their product name for several other distinct lines, such as children's clothing and fashion eyewear. Following a bout of controversy, Escada made the decision to go completely fur-free in early 2011.Fragrances were first introduced in the Escada collection in 1990, with the release of Escada for women. The fragrance was updated and reissued in 2005. The aquatic fragrance, featuring top notes of black currant, green leaves and cucumber along with a tasteful finish of sandalwood, vanilla and tangerine, remains popular today.In 1993, Escada pour Homme was launched, signaling the start of the company's line of fragrances for men. This masculine scent is a rich oriental, with spicy top notes such as allspice and bergamot; nutmeg, caraway and cinnamon through the middle; and a finish that features patchouli, sensual musk and vanilla.Other stars of the Escada fragrance line up include Desire Me, a seductive floral for women; Ibiza Hippie, an explosive and energetic women's fragrance; and Sunset Heat, a joyful and exotic men's fragrance.
