Guerlain was founded in Paris by Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain and up until 1994, was run solely by the Guerlain family. The first store was run by Pierre-Francois and his two sons, Aime and Gabriel. High successful and popular among Paris society, the first flagship store was opened in 1840. Guerlain caught the eye of the nobility, and in 1853 created a perfume specifically for Emperor Napoleon III and his wife: Eau de Cologne Impériale. He also reached international renown, and designed perfumes for royalty, including England's Queen Victoria, and Spain's Queen Isabella. After Pierre-Francois' death in 1864, his sons inherited the business, with Aime taking on the role of master perfumer and Gabriel running the business end of things, including expanding the business. Aime was known as the creator of a number of classic fragrances, including Jicky, developed in 1889. It was the first to be referred to as "parfum." It was also one of the first to incorporate synthetic ingredients as well as natural extracts.Following the era of Gabriel and Aime, Gabriel's sons Jacques and Pierre took over, with Jacques assuming the master perfumer position. Jacques Guerlain is responsible for developing a number of classic Guerlain scents, many of which of still available today. Some of his most famous creations include:-- Mouchoir de Monsieur-- Après L'Ondée-- L'Heure Bleue-- Vol de NuitOne of Jacques' most famous creations, developed in 1925, was Shalimar, which has withstood the test of time and remains popular to this day. More recent versions of this scent, for example Shalimar Parfum Initial, no doubt aim to emulate that original success. The last master perfumer to come from the Guerlain family was Jean-Paul Guerlain, grandson of Jacques Guerlain. Up until his retirement in 2002, he created popular fragrances for the Guerlain brand, including such classics as Vetiver and Habit Rouge, which was considered by some to be the first true Oriental for men.In 1994, the company was sold to Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, despite concern that this might make the brand less exclusive and lower the quality. Today Guerlain continues to make highly regarded and sought after fragrances, and continues to produce classic favorites from its long history. In addition to its vast perfume line, today's Guerlain also has a cosmetics and skin care line. Not only does Guerlain produce perfumes for women such as the Aqua Allegoria line and the Cherry Blossom line, and men's fragrances such as Guerlain Homme and the Vetiver line, they also have a diverse selection of unisex perfumes. Some of these include Tonka Imperiale, a rich and spicy scent; Rose Barbare, rosy and spicy but not as feminine as might be expected; and Cuir Beluga, with smooth leather and fresh mandarin.
