Today, as moderntechnology is widely used by people, the easy use of computers andsoftware has allowed individuals and companies to launch socialnetwork websites where people from different parts of the world cancommunicate. However, due to the diversity of the people, not allpeople can communicate effectively, and mostly only by using theirrespective languages.Through the internet, globalisation has been made possible. The linguistic and culturaldiversity of the people have made the world more unified andinteractive. Social media networks is just one example where peoplefrom different countries can communicate; Facebook, twitter andLinkedIn are amongst the most popular social media websites that themajority of the people using today. As the numbers of socialmedia users are widely increasing, the need for translation of thecontent has seen demand as well. Dissolving cultural and linguisticbarriers have become necessary on social media websites. A stumblingblock is that not all social media websites are providing languagetranslation to its every detail of content of their pages. Thus, itcreates a significant hindrance for people to achieve understandingwhich is a great requirement in every communication.Facebook launched atranslation tool of some of their content from one language toanother, which is at least beneficial. Well, I say at least becauseas of now, not all of their translated texts are correct. I noticedthat when I translated my friends comments written in Spanish intoEnglish. Although the Spanish texts were perfectly correct andintelligible, when I tried to translate them into English, the resultwas a funny and quite vague text. Undeniably, the socialmedia networks use of automated translation is efficient; however, one issue is that languages cannot be really translated properly thatway. Having an automated translation might not offer a clearinterpretation of a foreign text but at best, it provides glimpses orhints about the meaning of the text. Clear understandingrequires an accurate translation. So, if it is true that social mediawebsites are promoting socialization and communication, they shouldprovide accurate translation services that facilitate reallyeffective communication. In addition, one commonissue on social media websites is that not every language isavailable for translation. Therefore, not all languages areaccessible to be understood by some target audiences, which wouldmake it an uphill struggle for them to understand the entire contentor message of the page. It should be rememberedthat the main objective of social media is to form a global communitywhere there will be no complications of understanding the culture andlanguage of different people; and thus, these necessities should beprovided to the people who are involved and who use such social mediatools.
