Google has implemented personalized results inyour web searches. In laymans terms, Google is recording your Internet surfinghabits and striving to make search results very attractive to you. For example, suppose you live in Sacramento and have visited several triathlete websiteswithin the past few weeks. You perform a Google search for active and healthythings to do in Sacramento and Google produces search results that prominentlylist triathlons. Why did Google list triathlons so prominently?Google records your web surfing habits and therefore knows what you do. Google usesthis information to produce search results that you should find very appealing. This works to your benefit. You getsearch results that more closely fit your habits and interests. You are more likelyto click one of these links. You will find these results more valuable thanresults leaning toward hockey or football. You can test this theory. Go Google one ofyour favorite interests and record the results you find on page 1. Then, loginto your gmail account and perform the same search. You will get differentresults in the second search because Google will know who is performing thesearch. The results here should be more tailored to you and your interests.Personalized ResultsHere is an example to show the results aredifferent. I logged into my gmail account on June 24, 2012 andgoogled Sacramento cloud computing. I appeared on page 1, atpositions 1, 2 and 3 out of 2 million results. The second and third entries indicatepersonalized results. I can tell by the person figure on the left. Google knewwho was performing the search and created entries it felt would appeal verystrongly to me. Screen captures are at http://cameronparkcomputer.com/blog/why-you-need-to-understand-personalized-results/Anonymous ResultsOn the flip side, I also performed this searchwhile not logged into my gmail account. Remember, the searchterm is Sacramento cloud computing and I performed this searchon June 24, 2012:I am on page 1 at positions 2, 3 and 8, out of2 million results. None of these entries are personalized, since I performedthis search anonymously (not logged in to my gmail account). SummaryNext time you want to review your Internetpresence, go google the key phrases you think your ideal customers would typein a google search window. You can google yourself while logged into gmail orany other Google service and then log out and google yourself again. You willsee a difference. Enjoy.
