Philosophers areconsidered to be wise visionaries and thinkers who suffered thetragedy of being labeled eccentric or ridiculous fortheir unique pattern of thoughts during their lifespan. Mostphilosophers were unappreciated during their lifetime.Thegenesis of philosophybegan with the Roman and Greek philosophers, at around 600 BC.Philosophy evolved when men began to question their purpose on earth.There are several schools of thoughts to philosophy. TheGenesis of Philosophy: TheoriesImportantphilosophical theories that comprise the Genesis of Philosophyinclude:*Rationalism: It propounded that human beings are intellectualcreatures who have the ability to question and analyze variousaspects of life. Parmenides, a Greek Philosopher, is believed to bethe first worlds first rationalist. Other popular rationalistsinclude Plato, Descartes and Locke. Rationalism involves establishinga premise and attempting to deduce it. Empiricists also developedduring this time, who believed in the opposite school of thought,known as empiricism. *Skepticism: This philosophy involves continual questioning andtesting to obtain knowledge. The theory was articulated by a Greekphilosopher called Pyrrho and popularly propounded by SextusEmpiricus.*Existentialism: This is based on the core idea of non existence ofhuman nature and existence of unique individual characteristics. Itwas first propounded by Soren Kierkegaard, who held that truth issubjective. He voiced that truth; especially regarding religiousfaith should be questioned passionately by every individual. *Structuralism: This philosophy propounds that every field, fromreligion to science, is a complex system that is made up of a largenumber of inter-related parts. It was first articulated by Ferdinandde Saussure in the 19thcentury. The theory was accepted across all major fields. However, italso faced opposition by a group who felt that structures could nottranscended. They were collectively called the poststructuralists.Thegenesis of philosophy continued after the enlightenment era.This period witnessed the rise of political philosophers, whoquestioned the workings of the governments. Another influentialbranch of philosophy pertained to socio-economic theories thatincluded two opposing schools of thoughts put forth by Adam Smith andKarl Marx. The former voiced free trade and removal of restrictionswhereas the later supported tightening of governmental control.
