What are paintings? They are trapdoors into the psyche of a painter; sometimes they are illustrative and can be understood with ease. At other times, they have deep layers and any amount of interpretation may not suffice. World over, many art movements have done well. Picassos Cubism, Dalis Surrealism and Cezannes impressionism render few examples. Few painting genre have also looked to define what has largely been undefined; a part of twisted subconscious frame of mind. One such format of painting is the abstract paintings. The abstract art uses such colors, visual and lines that can exist without referring directly to the pre-set norms of the world. An abstract painting can stand on its own without carrying a single part that can be identified by the world. Western art in the 18th century got besotted with defining a new perspective of art; one that played with the illusory nature of visual reality. Such interplay of conflicting perspectives gave rise to a desire to engage in a new art form. Abstract art found its roots in impressionism, expressionism and romanticism. They were subverted, twisted art forms standing for the psyche of the oppressed. Abstract paintings looked to enhance the visual dynamics of a painting rather than looking to define objects. Thus an abstract painting automatically became an object of profound enquiry. In fact, sometimes a study of hours is also not enough to comprehend what an abstract painting might mean. Abstraction percolates all the fibers of living. Man looks to build concrete structure but the abstraction of his heart needs to find vent. This is why Russia lapped the art form with bated breath. The artists came to be known as constructivists and began to believe that it was not art or its expression but life itself. Native cultures have always formulated key painting concepts aligned to the abstract but it is only in 1910 that abstraction came in the way it is known today. It was mastered by a man called Pablo Picasso and his friend Georges Braque. Picassos cubism was aligned to looking at things from vantage point. The way that god might have seen them. This is why if they made a human face. Its front and back was visible simultaneously. After all, was God not able to see both the sides together? Braque first designed the concept of faceting an image so that it covered the summary of an object rather than the looks. Abstract paintings are marked by subtle nuances. Often it gives the impression of leading nowhere. Things, patterns and use of color is fused in such away that objects intermingle but even then the paintings seems to be the answer to the illusion of reality and aims to encompass all that might seem hidden, esoteric within the human subconscious. Today abstract paintings are overviewed by three main needs; the requirements of the transcendental, the contemplative and the timeless. Today, more than ever before, abstraction in paintings has come within the ambit of consumerism.
