Essence of Emotion Poets, mystics, philosophers, andscientists have long pondered the mysteries of the heart. Religiousthought claims the heart as the center of spiritual love. Christianityassociates divine love with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Hindus revereShivas sacred heart, Buddhists extol the heart as the site ofcompassion, and Sufis see the heart as the seat of God. The ancientEgyptians believed that the heart was home not only to emotions butalso to thought, personality, moral awareness, and the soul. Greekphilosopher Aristotle believed that the heart, not the brain, was theseat of mental processes. We now know that the heart doesindeed have a mind of its own. Simple experiments on frogs in highschool laboratories demonstrate that the heart, composed of involuntarycardiac muscle, is autogenic or self-excitatorysignals for initiatingcontraction need not come from the brain but can also originate in theheart muscle itself. Your heart beats continuously for yourentire lifetime, fulfilling its primary function of circulating oxygenand nutrient rich blood throughout your body. It also affects you inother ways: neurologically, by transmitting nerve impulses;biophysically, with pressure waves; biochemically, with hormones andneurotransmitters; and energetically, with electromagnetic fields. Withevery heartbeat, energy and information are transmitted to all yourcells and back again. This excited exchange is the energy charge wecall emotion (energy in motion) from the Latin verb meaning to move. Although your heart is about the size of your fist, metaphorically itcan expand to embrace the entire planet and all humanity as well asthat one person who you know as your soul mate, in a sublime energyfield of love and compassion. In order to expand your heart in thisway, you must unlock it and reclaim your Heart Freedom.
