Finally herelented and drilling commenced, but as weeks went by nothing happened. Deeperand deeper they went with this strange new rotary drilling system.            An Austrian-bornmining engineer named Anthony Lucas, was supervising the drilling of the oilwell since October 27, 1900. A minor setback delayed them due to the necessity of installing anew drilling bit for the rig. It was now January 10, 1901. The drilling crewbegan lowering the new bit to the bottom of the hole. They ran for about 700feet of drill pipe into the 1,000-foot hole. Out of nowhere the well suddenlystarts spewing the drilling mud back out. Thrilled with the sudden turn of events the crew scurried out withexcitement to see what in the world was happening. Alas, it was a false alarm!They all returned back to their posts and started cleaning but once again withno warning the mud erupts. A geyser of oil gushed upward 200 feet above the60-foot-high oil derrick. It was so overpowering that the spouting oil blew the entire drillpipe out of the hole.  It began to flowover 80,000 barrels of oil a day. Suitable for the well was “Spindletop.”  What was truly amazing is the fact thatbefore Spindletop the biggest oil producer was only flowing a meager 50 barrelsper day. Hence this pioneered the modern petroleum into a multi-billionindustry.Here’s something toponder, did our subject go from wretched poverty to a rich oil tycoonovernight?  Absolutely not! He has alwaysbeen rich!  He was living on top of anasset that needed to be tapped in!
