We spend so much time trying to get the business up and running that we may end up becoming burned out and lose our motivation. There is so much to learn and
Someone did you wrong and youre angry; youre not justangry, youre plotting a way to get even. You cant wait tosee that so-and-so, and turn the tables on him.Nations do that, too, on a larger scale; Israelis attackPalestinians in retaliation for a Palestinian attack whichwas revenge for an Israeli attack, which was payback for aPalestinian reprisal, which was...You see where this isgoing. We read about similar escalations frequently; perhaps youvebeen a party to an extended personal battle with someone. Ifso, who won? Not who was the last person standing, but whobenefited and who lost as a result of the payback cycle? No one won, if the definition of to win is to feel joy, peace, calm, or any loving emotion. The best we can feelwhile participating in a continuing cycle of payback is abrief touch of self-satisfaction-nothing like joy. To feelany of the strongly positive emotions requires forgiveness. What does it mean to forgive? We usually think offorgiveness as a generous act which pardons another personfor wrongdoing. In this context, forgiveness is directedtoward another, as in "I forgive you for saying hurtfulthings to me yesterday." The forgiver then feels magnanimoushaving granted a pardon to the sinner. Often we forgive onlyafter the sinner has contritely apologized; sometimes weforgive expecting the apology. However, one meaning of forgive is to give up resentment orclaim to retaliation. In this context, forgiveness is notabout another person-its about us. When I realize that Ifeel better when I give up anger and vengeful thinkingtoward another, it makes sense that forgiveness is somethingI give to myself, not something I grant to another. Whatbetter gift might I give myself than peace, calm, andserenity? We cannot simultaneously feel anger and peace. Wecannot be serene while planning revenge. This definition of forgiveness-to give up resentment-givesmeaning to "turn the other cheek." Its not a passiveacceptance of more wrongdoing, its a turning away from theevent altogether. When we give up our resentment and anger,we withdraw energy from the event-without energy, everyhuman act shrivels and dies. Thats the meaning of thephrase, "what you resist, persists."When we forgive a perceived wrongdoing by giving upresentment and anger, we withdraw our energy from the pastevent and preclude a continuing sequence of revenge, retribution, payback, and reprisal-we literally starve theprocess before it escalates.Forgiveness is more than a magnanimous act of charity.Forgiveness is a gift to ourselves-a gift of peace, calm, and serenity. Forgive and forget allows us to move on toactivities with positive potential-activities with thepossibility of joy.
